July 24
Over the weekend, I had a power failure for over 5 hours. Probably due to the
thunderstorm passing through. So during this time, I went over to the Galleria
for some dinner and entertainment. After I came back, the power was still out,
so I took a short nap until it came on again. I can't say it was a very
productive weekend.
July 17
I joined the Mariott Health Club even though it required a pretty large down
payment. The equipment there is ok, a little bit old, but they have everything
I need including a small basketball court. I also received the Geforce 2 GTS video card... very fast, even
compared to the Geforce 256 SDR that I had previously. It even made the latency
of online games like Quake3 seem more reasonable.
I need to catch up on a few things I wanted to accomplish this summer, because
it's already half over.
I got attacked by ants over the weekend, they were all over my carpet, biting
my legs. I vacuumed them all up a few times, hopefully they'll go away. I
found a huge 1.5" cockroach in my room. I threw a huge book at it a few times
to stun it and then put it in a plastic bag and threw it into the dumpster.
That was somewhat scary.
Last night I played starcraft with Marc and
Eric, but Eric played so badly that we couldn't finish them off even
though we pretty much killed most of what they had. We missed our opportunity
and got killed.
July 10
Played basketball this weekend at church. I was a bit rusty and a bit out of
shape so this week I'm going to start doing more exercise and hopefully I can
get into the Mariott Health Club which even has a basketball court.
I'm ordering some new computer books so that hopefully I can learn something
this summer that I might be able to use to get a better job after I graduate.
I'm tired so I'm going to stop writing here.
July 5
Kind of fixed the problem with connecting. Usually I have to connect through a
different shell first. One of these days I'll figure it out. And one of these
days I'll update this page.
Over the weekend I met Bryan Lee and we went out to eat and watched a movie.
He also took me to church and drove me around a bit. I didn't do anything on
the 4th though. Anyway, I'm off to do other things now...
June 27
For some reason or another, I couldn't connect to my account through RoadRunner
after their upgrade, so I couldn't ftp or telnet in to update this page.
June 14
I have yet to gateway my mac into the network. Therefore, I couldn't do my
update on the hobbies part 2 page because I designed the graphic on my mac.
I'll probably get to it tonight, maybe during halftime of the Pacers-Lakers
game. Anyway, more later I suppose.
June 13
My cable modem was installed last night. It was nice having something to do
at home other than walk across the street to the Galleria to eat dinner or
whatever. I do plan to update the hobbies part 2 page tonight, just to add
another picture and some text. I'm thinking of a way to restructure my
webpage, just to make it look nicer. But I'm not going to resort to using
Macromedia's Flash only because I think it does not add much value to the
content.
Pacers vs. Lakers... hm, I wanted both teams to lose and the Knicks to win.
Since they probably both won't be disqualified in the remaining games, I'd say
I want the Lakers to win. Their season record is against the Pacers is greater
than .500 so I'd say there's a good chance that they'll win, as long as they
don't run into any more situations where a player is injured. Seems like every
team in the final 4 has had injuries in the playoffs except the Pacers.
Anyway, back to work.
June 7, 2k
I've moved into an apartment by the Galleria in Houston and have started my
job. My computers came yesterday and arrived with many loose parts inside,
i hope they're still functional.
I also ordered cable modem which will be installed in 5 days. I'm going to go
rent some furniture later today.
May 27, 2k
I'm home now, I found out that I lost 15 lbs since my last visit home.
I have a bit of stuff to take care of before I leave, so the next update will
probably be when I'm in Houston.
May 25, 2k
I've decided to go to Houston, TX, to work with a company called IP-Mill for
the summer. Sure, it's kind of far from home, but I think it should be a good
learning experience. I don't know anyone who lives around there, so I'll
probably spend some time revamping my webpage and maybe learning Java.
I have one final left... Economics. Shouldn't be too difficult, though I guess
I could have studied a bit more. Oh well. =p
May 14, 2k
Knicks won game 4 (yay!). By the way, my Q3 clan, ZEN, has taken first place
in the Q3 Open Team CTF on ogl.org. Click
here to see the ladder.
May 12, 2k
Finals are coming up and I have to decide where I want to work this summer...
Knicks lost game 3 in a bad call...
Watched The Insider -- thought it was a pretty good movie.
Oh yeah, we won the IM crew
race for co-ed boats (go Currier!).

Deadlines are approaching once again. Don't expect anything here for a week or
so. Summer plans are still undecided, I'm deciding among a few job offers and
have a couple interviews left. If anyone has any software that reads 3D Studio
version 3.0 files or IGES files, let me know (need to convert a file for my
CS276r project) please!
April 25, 2k
Last week wasn't too fun. This week, I'm hoping to catch up on everything
including my CS 276r final project. My plans for this summer are still
undecided, so if anyone out there reading this has a great job offer for me,
let me know =)

Ok, this update is for those of you who check regularly and find nothing new
here :) I've fixed the problems with my PC, got an overclocking card, and am
now running at 750MHz stably. The only thing that crashes my computer is
random stuff I download (demos, shareware), otherwise everything works great.
It's going to be a busy weekend/week, so don't expect anything new here for a
while...
April 5, 2k
The PC is up and running, however I've been having some network problems as
well as sound driver problems. My ethernet jack died or has been partitioned
from the rest of the network for some reason -- perhaps because I attempted to
use a minihub, though the only computer I hooked up to the minihub was the one
already registered on the network.
The computer is a 600MHz Athlon with a Guillemot Prophet SE GeForce SDR. It's
quite a loud computer (twice as loud as my mac which already has an extra
hard drive and fan), and I hope to overclock the Athlon a bit. I tried Quake3
on it -- it was pretty good, however, there were some short periods of lag for
an unknown reason. Hope it's related to the sound driver problem. The
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer is pretty neat, though I haven't gotten it to
work with the USB ports yet. Anyway, time to give a presentation.
April 1, 2k
Well, the main parts of the PC aren't coming until Tuesday, so I guess I won't
get to assemble it right away. Hope all the parts are good... I also watched
The Bone Collector today (on DVD), that was pretty good. Played basketball
today and yesterday at Princeton... was pretty fun, but my shot is all off.
I guess it really helps to play every other day during the summer. Anyway,
vacation for me is coming to an end as I'm headed back to school tomorrow.
One strange coincidence is that I will be receiving the computer almost
exactly 2 years after I got my G3.
This is not a lame April Fools joke.
March 30, 2k
I'm home now -- I've ordered all the pieces of my PC, and they've all started
shipping via UPS ground. Hopefully I'll get the chance to assemble it once I
get back to school. Anyway, in the past few days, I've seen a bunch of
movies: Romeo Must Die, Pokemon The First Movie, Life is Beautiful, Final
Destination, Inspector Gadget, General's Daughter, Blue Streak, Lock, Stock,
and Two Smoking Barrels, Sixth Sense,
Fist of Legend, and a couple others that I have yet to see that my brother
borrowed. Anyway, I should get some more sleep...
March 26, 2k
Yesterday, I did my semi-annual bike-cleaning. I couldn't find my hex
wrenches, so I couldn't tighten my seat and check some of the screws.
Vacation has started, and I'm working on some of the stuff that's due right
after break is over. Then I'm going home for a few days to eat good food.
MouseMove might take a short little break as far as development goes.
I'm also thinking of ordering an Athlon 600MHz cpu and some parts to put
together. Anyway, I'd better get some sleep...
March 21, 2k
So today I went to try out to be on the show Greed. I didn't make it past the
written test -- the questions were all from the shows, and I recognized a
couple. I've only watched that show twice, and I think the show is kind of gay
anyway. I would not want to be on national tv saying, "yes, Jim, I feel the
need for greed!" Fox 25 news came and did some interviews, and in one of the
transition shots, my back was shown for a split second as I discovered through
careful examination of slow motion video, but it wasn't worth saving.
I was interviewed on CNN a long time ago, but unfortunately, I don't have that
video.
I've also released my program, MouseMove v1.0, which prevents idling out by
moving the mouse to random places on the screen. You can find the product page
here. It only works with PPC macs at the moment though.
I've submitted it to Download.com and
Versiontracker. It has not yet
appeared on Download.com, but after making it's appearance on Versiontracker,
it has gotten over 1,100 downloads. I also recently updated it to version
1.0.1, as I discovered a couple bugs.
March 14, 2k
Well, the second match I played didn't go so well. We weren't exactly playing
with our "normal" roster, and also didn't have the convenience of using our
clan server.
Anyway, I'm studying for my Economics midterm, hope they don't take too many
questions from the readings =). I always end up doing poorly on that part
because I never really bother to memorize that material.
I think my paper turned out all right... I wrote half of the paper the morning
of the day it was due in about 2 hours time. Though I didn't get to draw out
my argument, I managed to churn out 7 pages anyway.
One thing that I found
quite funny was that I put Natalie Merchant's "In the Ghetto" on the simplenet
server for my brother to listen to, in order to compare it with Eric Cartman's
version. Apparently someone was snooping around my directory and posted it on
one of those mp3 search sites, and it was downloaded over 1000 times in the
past two weeks! Mendelssohn Octet and Brahms Sextet were downloaded about 400
times each (you can find these in my archives section), which is about the
usual number these days. I wonder if people realize that they aren't
professionals nor are they professional recordings after they download them
from the mp3 search sites =)
March 9, 2k
Played my first match with the Quake 3 clan I joined (Zen) as part of the
Teamplay.net ladder. We defeated our
opponents pretty decisively, though in the second game, they were missing a
player (normally 4v4). Anyway, hopefully this clan will go much further, and
perhaps gain some fame in the Quake 3 community =).
In other news, I'm staying up almost all night tonight to write my paper for
the Fairy Tales class that I'm taking. I'm writing about Little Red Riding
Hood. The challenge will be transferring and extending the idea to paper into
5-7 pages. Haven't written a paper in a while, so it should be a challenge.
Hopefully, the result will not show how defunct my paper-writing abilities have
become. Many of my projects are on temporary hold, as my midterms are in these
next two weeks.
March 3, 2k
I started the Macintosh version of AJ's GradeBoy, basically working on the
interface, using the Appearance manager to make it look nice. I don't know
when I'll actually have time to finish this part, and the next step would be to
do the actual programming of record-keeping and error handling.
I also ordered a PC (500MHz Pentium 3) for $371, which includes most features
that you would normally purchase with a PC unit, but lacks a monitor. I'll
probably use the 2nd input to my monitor for that purpose, or just run a VNC
server. =) Only thing is that it takes up to 5 weeks to be shipped, so
hopefully when I come back from spring break, I'll have it. Does this mean
I'll start using PCs from now on? No, not really, I'll probably install BeOS,
Windows, and Linux on it and use it as a server.
I joined a Quake 3 Clan called ZEN
as Lord Death (my old Warcraft 2 name). Apparently, Lord Death is also the
name that the Descent champion used.
Anyway, it's supposedly a good clan, currently ranking 8th on the OGL Open CTF Team Ladder. I was recruited by
Ghostman who was one of the founders of the clan as we played a few random CTF
games on nini.mit.edu. I haven't played actual matches with them, but we've
played scrimmages, and am confident that we could climb higher on the OGL
ladder =) In one of our informal scrimmages against the RVF clan, we played
with a guy from id Software (unbeknownst to me until after the game), Mr
Elusive. I don't really know his real name, but he has designed Quake bots and
such, though I have no clue what he does now, but I'll have a couple
screenshots available later.
Today, as I was running down the stairs, I cut my hand on something on the
handrail, and I'm not even sure what it was. I went to the Greenhouse to get a
drink (Arizona Ginseng Iced Tea), and took a sip and it was spoiled. I was
able to return it and get a new one (the cashier said, "they taste kind of
funky anyway"), but my stomach is not agreeing with it at the moment.
February 21, 2k
Wow, the month is almost over, and I haven't accomplished much.
I'm contemplating writing a macintosh version of AJ's GradeBoy, but only if I
find the time.
I kind of wasted the vacation watching basketball on TV, but at least I got
caught up in most of my classes.
February 17, 2k
Never order from 1800flowers.com! See my post about my
experience with them this past valentine's day (look for a post by ccho).
Being a public company, they should probably be a little more careful and make
sure everything works properly.
February 15, 2k
I watched the NBA All-Star game over the weekend and was attempting to use
nba.com's streaming audio to see what the players on the bench were saying. It
started to cut out as they advertised nba.com repeatedly, probably dying from
lack of available bandwidth. I also hate realplayer and realaudio, but that's
another matter. The technology implementation was just not done properly.
The game was fun though, lots of dunks from both sides.
February 11, 2k
I ordered some books online and bought a few at the Coop today for Fairy Tales.
I also ordered the Sharp MT831 Minidisc
Recorder/Player from some place in Hong Kong. It has a pretty good battery
life (using two batteries), and will probably serve as my only portable audio
device. Anyway, gotta go to class.
February 10, 2k
Well, I got into Fairy Tales off the waiting list, so it looks like I'm going
to be taking 5 courses this semester. If you've seen the funny commercial I
posted a link to yesterday, you might like this. It's a pretty fun shockwave
game, similar to the actual Chu Chu Rocket game. I finished all the levels, it
was pretty entertaining. You don't really need to know any Japanese to figure
it out.
February 9, 2k
Here's a pretty
funny commercial [1.1MB] for a Japanese Dreamcast game. I got lotteried out of
Fairy Tales (I've only been lotteried out of core courses, never lotteried in
:( ).
So my final courselist appears to be:
CS 244
CS 276r
Ec 10
Korean History 111
I also went skiing at Mt. Sunapee last weekend with some people from the church
I went to in Lexington, MA. If I were a mountain, that would not be a name I
could live with. I ski-ed down pretty much all the slopes, except for the
snowboard-only one. I haven't gone skiing in a while, but it turned out that
it wasn't too difficult to relearn. My boots were a bit small, so my feet were
pretty sore.
February 3, 2k
I'm thinking of some changes to make on my webpage... maybe I'll do that
tonight.
Addendum: haha, yeah right. I forgot what I wanted to change...
February 2, 2k
I saw this on the
Simpsons recently. I guess Matt Groenig thinks that P = NP (which hasn't
been proven yet). Ok, maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about...
Here are the courses I'm shopping:
Lit and Arts A-18 (Fairy tales)
CS 276r (Graphics)
CS 144/244 (Networks)
Science A-35 (Matter in the Universe)
Korean History 111

Today's my birthday, I'm getting old...
January 28, 2k
Well the webcam is no longer up, so I deleted the link.
I'm home for intersession, my birthday is in a couple days. I'm gathering
information on what internships I'll be applying to. Ok, time to do something
more interesting...
Oh yeah, buy a slashdot mug -- the penguin design was done by me.
January 24, 2k
I setup my roommate's webcam.
Finals will be over by tomorrow afternoon!
Here is a final screenshot of
my CS175 project. Sorry about the quality, I just wanted to make it a faster
download. Maybe someday I'll work on it further, just for fun (as if
converting the data structures into something more efficient will be fun).
January 22, 2k
I'm
the voice of Dark Specter!.
Ok, that's not really me, just someone impersonating me.

I've been doing some reading and working on my OpenGL project. So far, I've
gotten the human-like joint constraints to a convincing level and designed
most of the primitives and appearance for the figure. Here are some
some screenshots of my development: 1

Enjoy.
January 5, 2000
Well I'm back at school. I ported an old OpenGL project from my class to
mac today, you can download it here
. No documentation included, you'll have to figure out the interface yourself.
It involves some keystrokes and mouse actions, figure it out for yourself...
December 31, 1999 - January 1, 199a
Happy New Year!!!
News from 1999
